With its state-of-the-art injection moulding machinery and extruders, the plastics technology centre is the place where new materials are being developed, and compounding and injection moulding of bio-based as well as conventional plastics and composites goes on. Besides application-oriented materials development, research is also focusing on the processing behaviour of these new materials and the relationships between material composition and processing behaviour.

In collaboration with the HOFZET Application Center (Fraunhofer WKI), the IfBB conducts a wide range of tests in its laboratories for materials testing and analysis, to develop and examine conventional materials, especially plastics, as well as bio-based materials (biopolymers, natural fibre reinforced composites, paper etc.) and other products made from renewable raw materials.

In collaboration with the HOFZET Application Center (Fraunhofer WKI), the IfBB conducts extensive research into the recycling of bio-based plastics and bio-composite materials.

Thermosetting and thermoplastic (bio) composites are being developed at the IfBB using state-of-the-art machinery and equipment and in collaboration with the HOFZET Application Center (Fraunhofer WKI). Besides application-oriented materials development, research is also focusing on the processing behaviour of these new materials and the relationships between material composition and processing behaviour.
