Are bioplastics more expensive than conventional petro-based plastics?
Currently, the price of bioplastics is somewhat higher than the price of conventional plastics. For example, PET or PE based on sugar cane or bio-ethanol, ranges at about 20% above the price of conventional plastics. In the long run however, more demand for petrochemical products will push the price for traditional plastics while bioplastics will become less expensive with increasing demand and increasing production capacities (economies of scale).
